I wanted to reach out to all of you who are currently in quarantine because of the coronavirus pandemic. Okay, I just used three pretty big words there, so maybe it’s a good idea to explain them and let you know what’s going on right now. In my book The ABCs of Conscious Capitalism for KIDs, I tell kids not to let big words stop them from learning. Don’t let anything stop you. Jump in and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
In business, many companies have something called FAQs, which is a list of frequently asked questions from their customers or employees or suppliers. Sometimes they post them on their website or in their stores so they are easy to find. So I thought maybe a list of FAQs could be cool, and you can help me. Below is the beginning of my “FAQs for Conscious Kids in Quarantine.” You can help me by sending me your questions too, and together we’ll make this really great list that we can share with everyone—your parents, teachers, grandparents, and your classmates too.
What is a quarantine?
Quarantine means a period of time where you are in a place with limited exposure to other people. The reason for a quarantine is to keep people from contracting a disease from other people who may have been exposed to that disease.
What is the coronavirus, and why is everyone talking about it so much?
The coronavirus is a contagious disease and can spread quickly if people are not careful. One type of coronavirus is COVID-19, which is the cause of the current pandemic.
What is a pandemic? Is it the same thing as an epidemic?
A pandemic and an epidemic are not the same thing. An epidemic refers to a sudden increase in the number of cases of a disease above what is normally expected. And a pandemic refers to an epidemic that has spread over several countries or continents, usually affecting a large number of people. Right now, you are in quarantine because the coronavirus is spreading all over the world. And by staying in quarantine, you are keeping yourself and your family safe and preventing the coronavirus from spreading.
What can I do to help?
In The ABCs of Conscious Capitalism for KIDs, the letter P stands for Positive Purpose. Right now is a good time to think about your positive purpose. Think about something you’re good at. Something you love to do. Now, think about what value (or positive purpose) this adds to your life and to the lives of the people around you. Right now, while you’re in quarantine because of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s important to use your positive purpose to help others if you can. Conscious companies are doing the same thing—like donating face masks and hospital gowns to help the doctors and nurses who are treating people with coronavirus or making sure their employees have medical care if they get sick.
Finding your skills and your positive purpose can be like working with a box of crayons. Every crayon represents a skill or talent you have. So while you’re in quarantine, use your skills to help find your positive purpose. Play with what makes you unique, and don’t be afraid to use all the crayons in your box. Discovering all your skills can be like leaping from a box of forty-eight crayons to a box with sixty-four different colors! Now is the time to explore all the great things that make you a positively purposeful person!
P.S. And please let me know if you have any questions. I will answer them and add them to our “FAQs for Conscious KIDs in Quarantine” list.
